Dr. Luke records in Acts 6, that, in those days when the number of disciples (followers) multiplied there arose some murmuring because it appears as thou some of the Grecians widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration (distribution) of food. Due to the explosive growth of the church in such a short period, the Apostles had to "play catch-up", in meeting the daily needs of these new converts by the Spirit of God in action.
The scripture records that the twelve Apostles saw this situation and called all the disciples and had their first administrative meeting on how to address the physical needs of a growing and vibrant apostolic church.
They recognized the explosive growth by the Spirit of God in action and concluded that, we should not leave the preaching of the Gospel to serve food to the people, but we should find men who were also filled with the Holy Ghost and wisdom to appoint over the matter of serving tables, while we freed ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word.
In verse 5-7 of this text we see the first record of how God intended the Apostolic church leaders to be chosen to take care of the "business" side of the church. The scripture says that the whole multitude choose Stephen a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip and Prochorous, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas. They then set them before the Apostles, laid their hands and them and prayed.
The scripture records in verse 7 that as a result of this new structured organization, the word of God increased and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem and a great number of priests became converts to the faith (the gospel of Jesus Christ).
