The Holy Ghost (Spirit) in Action - Scene 29: Acts 12:18 - 25 - Herod's Death
The miraculous deliverance of Apostle Peter from prison attracted the attention of the soldiers who were charged with securing him. When daylight came and they did not see their high valued target in prison, Dr. Luke said that these soldiers were at a loss on how Peter could not be found.
King Herod was informed of this "escape" and sent out a contingent of soldiers to find Peter. This ‘search party" did not find Peter and the soldiers who were on guard for the night when Peter "escaped" were court marshalled and sentenced to death.
Herod then left Judea and went down to Caesarea and abode there for a while to "cool off", about Peter’s disappearance from prison. This same Herod was also very dissatisfied with the Jewish rulers of the cities of Tyre and Sidon. The leader of these cities got Herod’s trusted servant – Blastus - to be their friend and used him to help in negotiating a peace treaty with Herod.
The scripture says that on a certain day, King Herod was fully dressed in the pomp’s and regalry of his kingship, and sat upon his throne, and then he made a great speech to those who came into the royal court. The audience gave a shout and proclaimed that this speech was like the voice of a god and not a man.
Dr. Luke in recording the incident in verse 23, stated, "immediately the Spirit of God in action, mobilized an angel who smote King Herod, because he gave not God the glory, and he was eaten of worms and he gave up the ghost".
This action by God proved to the entire world, that He alone must be glorified for His workings in and through humanity. Human beings are only vessels that God uses, according to His divine will, and should not be credited for the works which belong to and are of God.
