Dr. Luke says that this woman, Lydia, was convicted after heard the message of salvation through Jesus Christ and requested baptism in the name of Jesus Christ along with her household. The disciples baptized her and her entire family. She then invited Paul and his companions to her house, through her persuasive arguments of her sincerity to her new found faith in Jesus Christ.
While still in Philippi, Paul and his companions went as usual to the place of prayer. On this occasion there was a certain young female slave who had a spirit of divination, which brought her masters much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the group, shouting " These men are the servants of the most high God, who are telling you the way to be saved". She kept doing this for many days. Finally Apostle Paul became so annoyed and said by the Spirit of God in action, "I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!". At that moment, the spirit of divination came out of her.
When this slave girl masters saw that their hope of making money was gone as a result of her liberation from demonic oppression, they caught Paul and Silas and drew them in the marketplace to face the authorities. They then brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city in uproar by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."
This week’s blog of the Apostle Paul and companions on their second missionary journeys throughout Asia Minor once again shows importance of the spirit of God in action. It is through and by the Spirit of God in action, we are able to carry out the work of evangelism and effectively counter and thwart the plans and workings of Satan.
